PROTECTION OF DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE AT FRANKFURT AIRPORT THROUGH E-BULB

Integrated Fire Protection for Terminal 3

With the opening of Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport at the end of April 2026, one of Europe’s most significant infrastructure projects was completed. The terminal not only sets new architectural standards but also establishes a fully digitized environment in the Digital-Out-of-Home (DOOH) sector. Approximately 57 airlines will be gradually integrated into the new terminal, which was designed from the outset as a “DOOH-native” infrastructure. At its heart is a state-of-the-art digital advertising network featuring about 230 screens covering an area of approximately 2,500 square meters. These screens accompany passengers throughout their entire customer journey: from check-in to baggage claim. In collaboration with its partners LG Electronics and M-Cube, the JOB Group plays a central role: protecting this digital infrastructure through innovative fire protection solutions.

The Challenge

Increasing digitalization brings with it significant security and operational demands, particularly in high-traffic
and security-critical environments such as international airports.

The key challenges in the Terminal 3 project were:

  • Integration of fire protection into digital systems: Traditional fire protection solutions are often bulky and compromise the design and functionality of modern displays.
  • High safety requirements: Airports are subject to strict regulatory requirements, particularly regarding fire protection and operational safety.
  • Continuous, uninterrupted operation: The systems must operate around the clock without maintenance downtime or restrictions for passengers.
  • Aesthetic requirements: The digital infrastructure is an integral part of the architecture and must not be visually compromised. A solution therefore had to not only be reliable and certified, but also integrate seamlessly with the existing technology and design

The Solution

The JOB Group addressed these challenges with its VdS-certified E-Bulb technology for early fire detection.

  • Early detection of potential fire sources directly within the digital displays
  • Integration without structural modifications or operational restrictions
  • Invisible protection that does not compromise the architectural design of the LED installations
  • Certification directly from the factory through integration into LG LED modules in Korea

Through close collaboration with LG Electronics, the fire-extinguishing thermal fuse was integrated directly into the display modules. This eliminated the need for additional enclosures or external fire protection systems that would have disrupted the visual appearance. The result is a high-performance, safe, and aesthetically sophisticated DOOH infrastructure that sets new standards for airports worldwide.

Conclusion

The Frankfurt Terminal 3 project impressively demonstrates how digital innovation and intelligent fire protection can be combined. With its E-Bulb technology, the JOB Group has played a decisive role in ensuring that one of Germany’s most modern DOOH networks not only impresses visually but also meets the highest safety requirements. This creates a forward-looking example of modern infrastructure that offers both operators and millions of travelers each year the highest level of safety and performance.
